💡 Submission Tips
Here are 8 tips to help your poem stand out:
- Understand the Theme (and Respond Creatively):
This year the theme is ‘Seeds of Tomorrow’. Don’t just repeat it — explore it. Ask: What angle hasn’t been done a hundred times? What’s my unique way into this topic?
- Start Strong — Grab Attention Early:
Judges read a lot of poems. A striking first line, image, or question makes them want to keep reading. Don’t warm up too long — begin with fire.
- Make Every Word Earn Its Place:
Avoid filler. Use precise, vivid language. A single strong image or well-placed word can elevate your entire piece. Cut anything that doesn’t serve the poem.
- Avoid Clichés — Be Fresh:
Say common things in uncommon ways. Familiar ideas need fresh language.
- Show, Don’t Preach:
Poetry is not a sermon or a motivational quote. Let the message emerge through imagery, voice, and experience — not just direct statements.
- Edit Ruthlessly:
Don’t be afraid to rework or start over. Read your poem out loud. Listen for awkward lines, pacing issues, or emotional flat spots. Get feedback and revise.
- Mind the Form and Formatting:
Formatting matters. Use line breaks intentionally. Keep spelling and grammar clean — unless breaking rules for artistic effect.
- Submit with Care:
Follow all the submission guidelines. Double-check the deadline, count lines, and format. Typos or late entries can cost you, even with a great poem.
